The essential principles and reactions of organic compounds with interpretation through electronic structures and reaction mechanisms are covered. Topics include electronic structure, stereochemistry, nomenclature, and reaction mechanisms of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alcohols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, alkyl halides, and aromatic molecules. The 3-hour laboratory component involves instruction in experimental techniques of modern organic chemistry emphasizing stereochemical modeling, chemical separations, and reactions of alkanes, alkenes, and aromatic compounds.
